Ahmet Muhip Dıranas

(1909-1980)

Foam

Our revels now are ended, and joy fades away!

Eternal girls become mothers at the end of day.

Don’t look in the mirrors: they breed cruelty,

Plunge your mind into the everlasting sea;

And if some day you recall my face and my love,

Then I could strip you naked like a dove.

Now in the shep’s wake and its age-old foam

Towards the sea’s fathomless depths roam.
